Model C
Launch date: Sept/Oct 1904
Motor: 2-cyl, 10 HP
Wheelbase: 78"
Price: Runabout $850, Tonneau car $950
Essentially an updated Model A (Ford's first car and typical of American buggy-style cars of the era, assembled in a rented plant on Mack Avenue. This Model A should not be confused with the other, better known Ford Model A, which was put into production in 1928.) Ford increased the wheelbase 6 inches and increased the horsepower from 8 to 10. He added a stylish little "engine hood" up front, even though the engine was still beneath the seat.
Model F
Launch date: Sept/Oct 1904
Motor: 2-cyl, 12 HP
Wheelbase: 84"
Price: $1,000
The final 2-cylinder Ford car, the Model F was a most impressive machine. It gave the company an offering in the middle price range. Its real claim to fame was its roomy side-entrance body with proper running boards. However, it was still not the car Henry Ford ultimately wanted to build.
Model B
Launch date: Sept/Oct 1904
Motor: 4-cyl, 20 HP
Wheelbase: 92"
Price: $2,000
The first 4-cylinder, front engine Ford. It was large and expensive. Henry Ford approved of its modern mechanical features. But he disdained the high price, an attribute applauded by company co-founder, Alexander Malcomson. Model B proved to be a hard sell and lasted only through the 1905 season. About 500 were built.
Model K
Launch date: April 1906
Motor: 6-cyl, 40 HP
Wheelbase: 114"
Price: $2,500
Model K was a large, expensive, 6-cylinder motorcar and Henry Ford detested it! Model K was the last gasp of Ford's original partner, Alexander Malcomson. By mid-1906, Malcomson was gone. And by 1908, so was the Model K! It was the last upscale, luxury car offered by Ford Motor Company until the acquisition of Lincoln in 1922. Less than a 1,000 Model Ks were built from 1906 to 1908.
Model N
Launch date: July 1906
Motor: 4-cyl, 18 HP
Wheelbase: 84"
Price: $500
The Model N, perhaps the most underrated car in Ford Motor Company history, made the 3-year old firm the highest volume producer in America! Henry Ford was finally in charge, and the Model N clearly embodied his dream of a light, durable, reliable car offered at an affordable price. It was the prototype of the Model T.
Model R and S
Launch date, Model R: Feb 1907; Model S: July 1907
Motor: 4-cyl, 18 HP
Wheelbase: 84"
Price, Model R: $600; Model S Runabout $700, Roadster $750
Model R and S were merely cosmetic updates of the highly successful Model N. The chassis, engine and running gear were identical, save for a few mechanical improvements. The bodies, fenders and trimmings were more deluxe on the Model R and S.
Model T
Launch date: Sept 1908
Motor: 4-cyl, 20 HP
Wheelbase: 100"
Price: Touring $850, Roadster $850, Coupe $950, Landaulet $850, Town Car $1,000
Designed at the Piquette plant in 1907 and 1908, the Model T was the car Henry Ford knew America wanted. Light, flexible and simple, the Model T was Henry Ford's ultimate design. Model N had laid the groundwork. It was highly successful but needed much improvement. The first 12,000 Model Ts were built in the Piquette factory during 1908 and 1909, before moving to the Highland Park plant in 1910. For 19 years, over 15 million Model Ts would be sold, altering world culture drastically.
